The funding will include $90,000 for stage 2 upgrade to the AB Shaw Reserve play space and $40,000 for the Altona Meadows Junior Skate Park, with Hobsons Bay City Council contributing $280,000 to these projects.
$70,000 in funding was also announced for renewal of the cricket nets at Bryan Martyn Oval. The new facility will include a full size netball court and three-on-three basketball court. Hobsons Bay City Council and the clubs will contribute $40,000 each to the renewal of the oval.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay Angela Altair welcomed the announcement, saying that the AB Shaw funding will secure this reserve's standing as a showcase for the community.
She explained "the second stage of works at AB Shaw Reserve will result in a more inclusive space through the installation of new accessible play equipment, such as swings, tunnels, a trampoline and climbing structures.
"The upgrade will also include paths and new pedestrian access, as well as the establishment of natural play elements and a sensory garden, offering wonderful new play opportunities for the benefit of some of our youngest residents."
Bryan Martyn Oval is home to the Newport Digman Cricket Club and Newport Power Football and Netball Club and they, and the wider community, will benefit from the new facility.
Councillor Altair stated "the funding will be used to remove the existing cricket nets and build a new multisport facility comprising six cricket nets, one full size netball court and a three-on-three basketball court.
"The facility will provide a shared training space for the cricket and netball clubs and will remain open for public use at all other times.
"We have worked closely with the tenant clubs to ensure their needs are met and the clubs, as well as nearby residents, will have further input through the final design and construction stages of this project."
