Melbourne-based, the Australian Fitness Academy (AFA) has launched a new Certified Personal Trainer course in Singapore to revolutionise the fitness education space and fill a shortage of trainers in South-East Asia.

AFA has over 30 years’ experience delivering fitness education and now believes it’s time to replicate its successful business model in other regions.

Initially delivering the CPT course in Singapore, AFA has set its sights on becoming the leading provider of fitness qualifications across the South-East Asia region.

AFA Business Operations Manager, Ash Shenker notes “since 1993, we’ve helped over 30,000 Australians launch a career in fitness via our nationally- accredited Certificates. We now want to be able to provide the same opportunity to fitness enthusiasts across the world.

“We’ve developed a course based on the Australian-standard qualifications we believe will raise the quality of fitness professionals and assist businesses fill ongoing staff shortages in the wake of the pandemic.”

The CPT course is predominantly completed online and includes interactive presentations, resources and practical assessments, with a realistic completion time of 3-6 months.

The key point of difference AFA highlights as missing among existing fitness course providers in the region is the requirement for students to complete a Practical Placement program. This initiative will provide students with the opportunity to set up valuable relationships with local businesses and get real-world experience on the gym floor.

Shenker advised “gaining an understanding of the existing landscape by speaking with many fitness regional businesses, we quickly found there were huge inconsistencies in the calibre of graduates coming out of PT courses.

“There’s no way you can possibly learn and experience all there is to be a Personal Trainer by simply following a textbook and sitting an exam, and we could sense the frustration that Gym Managers were going through when looking for potential trainers.

“Our course standardises the outcomes for fitness graduates so businesses know the exact skill set and knowledge base they’re getting when hiring AFA alumni. Not only that, they get to onboard or trial a potential employee through our Practical Placement Program, bridging the gap to employment and providing a seamless pathway into the industry.”

AFA has partnered with industry registration body FITREC, which will accredit graduates of the CPT course as qualified Group Exercise Instructors and Personal Trainers, providing credibility and recognition within the industry and connecting students to potential employment opportunities.

“We’ve had a long and fruitful partnership with FITREC in Australia with many of our students utilising their registration to gain employment and establish a profile in the fitness industry, added Shenker.

“It’s really exciting to offer that same opportunity to graduates in South-East Asia, along with the potential for them to come to Australia to gain employment and assist in filling staff shortages here as well.”
