Australian Adventure Activity Standards move forward

Australian Adventure Activity Standards move forward
May 23, 2016

The work of the activity standard working group in the development of a single set of national standards for outdoors adventure activities in Australia is moving forward.

The Australian Adventure Activity Standards (AAS) are industry best practice guidelines used to manage risk and safety across more than 20 adventure activities.

To provide consistency across all of these activities, a group of 11 experienced outdoor activity leaders and managers has been established to agree by consensus on the common content of all activities. Each State and Territory (except the Northern Territory) has a representative and they have now met on many occasions with final drafting nearing completion.

As Recreation SA Life Member and AAS working group member Peter Vandepeer explains “a separate leadership sub group has also been working on documenting the leadership role that covers all activities and like the common core group, have met on many occasions in addition to use of the internet to write, comment and agree on content.

“The process has been complex and difficult to ensure that considerable thought, discussion and agreement has been reached before reaching a final draft that will be available for National consultation.”

Vandepeer  adds “a final face to face meeting is to be convened in Melbourne in the coming weeks to complete the final draft.

“Once the meeting confirms the draft, a public consultation process will be completed prior to it being ratified by the Steering Committee. This will then allow other working groups to be established to prepare the AAS for each activity.

“Currently a Bushwalking group is being established in readiness to start the Bushwalking activity standard after the common content is completed.”

Peak bodies collaborating on the project include The Outdoor Council of Australia, Outdoors WA, Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation, Recreation SA, Outdoor Recreation Industry Council of NSW and Outdoors Victoria, together with relevant government agencies in Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory.
