read moreLess than a year after its launch, Auckland Council's Sports Field Capacity Development Programme is already delivering on the Auckland Plan's aim to promote wellbeing through participation in recreation and sport.
The 10-year, $190 million programme focuses on upgrading and developing sports fields to increase available playing hours and address the uneven distribution of facilities across the region.
Projects involve collaboration between local boards, the council's parks team, sporting organisations and local clubs.
Recently completed projects include the installation of artificial turfs at Michaels Avenue Reserve in Ellerslie, Seddon Fields in Westmere, William Green Domain in Highland Park and Starling Park in Ranui.
Next up is Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush, where the eastern and western training fields will be upgraded to sand-carpeted fields.
By 2022, Aucklanders will be able to enjoy an additional 2,476 playing hours per week through:
• 66 fields with drainage improvements
• 134 new sand-carpeted fields
• 139 fields with new training lights
• 37 new artificial turf fields.
