Alternative management for Rushcutters Bay tennis courts

December 7, 2010
The City of Sydney is to consider commencing negotiations with alternative tennis management companies to run the Rushcutters Bay Tennis Centre.
Rory Miles Pty Ltd was unanimously chosen as the preferred tenderer for the management of the tennis courts on 24th September, but has since refused to sign the contract his company endorsed as part of their tender submission.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said his refusal to sign the contract is hurting the community, stating âwe're spending $8.3 million of ratepayers' money upgrading Rushcutters Bay tennis courts into quality facilities for the whole community.
"Mr Miles' refusal to sign the management contract has meant City of Sydney has had to make temporary arrangements for bookings for the centre just to keep it open and operating.
"We need to get on with the job, finish building the community a quality tennis facility and get a high quality operator in there to manage it effectively.?
The City of Sydney is also set to reaffirm its commitment to demolish a former caretakerâs cottage at the Ruschutters Bay site so that three new tennis courts can be built, replacing two old courts on the site and providing additional open space.
Demolition of the caretakerâs cottage, previously occupied by Rory Miles, has been opposed by local groups who claim it has heritage value. Protestors have occupied the building to prevent its demolition.
The $8.3 million upgrade to the tennis courts includes a new kiosk facility and courts, which the City of Sydney suggests âwill generate significant income each year for the operator, with an annual turnover anticipated to be between $350,000 to $600,000.?
