read moreSunshine Coast-based Advanced Aquarium Technologies (AAT) have been contracted to design and build the $20 million Aquarium of Oman.
The public aquarium public, to be located in a large shopping mall complex in the Omani capital of Muscat, will span three floors and contain 5000 metre² of marine exhibits.
Designed in association with Crossley Architects, the aquarium aims to spread a strong conservation message in the Middle East.
Commenting on the project, AAT Business Development Manager Zac Gill recently told the Sunshine Coast Daily about the challenges of designing a public aquarium in the Arabian Gulf.
With the aim of presenting an attraction that would engage visitors for an average of two hours enjoying the aquarium.
Gill explained "we really want them to get lost in the journey", adding that the attraction would be “about Oman's rich culture, (and its role as a)trade (route), and important trade hub.”
"We're having to consider the cultural requirements," Gill said, adding the public space needed to be designed with the largely Muslim community's needs in mind.
"For example, we couldn't have a female scuba diver diving without a close male family member accompanying her.”.
The project is AAT's first complete ‘design and construct’ project, and is being delivered with the help of Maroochydore-based firm Crossley Architects.
