read moreThe Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) has continued to demonstrate environmental leadership during 2013/14 by exceeding EarthCheck best practice in eight key areas including water savings, waste management and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
These achievements have been made more remarkable by the Centre undergoing a major expansion, which has impacted energy and water use, as well as having an outstanding year for conferences and events.
The outstanding results follow the ACC being given EarthCheck Gold Certification in January having achieved five years of continuous silver certification.
Commenting on the achievement, ACC Chief Executive Alec Gilbert stated "the whole team at the Centre is on-board, and particularly through the expansion works and a busy year, they’ve proved to be incredibly diligent.
“Sustainability not only makes sense environmentally but also economically and in turn this translates into better value for our clients.”
The Centre has been particularly successful in reducing food waste after becoming the first convention centre to use worms to recycle its organic waste in 2008 and partnering with local charities to donate spare meals to people in need. This year, the Centre passed the milestone of donating 100,000 spare meals to partners OzHarvest SA and Foodbank SA, who collect the meals and provide them to their own charity partners for distribution to disadvantaged South Australians.
