2010 Shanghai World Expo Completes Theme Pavilion

2010 Shanghai World Expo Completes Theme Pavilion
October 5, 2009

Timed to coincide with national celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo has announced the completion of the World Expo 2010 Theme Pavilion, the first of the four pavilions along the site's central axis.

The pavilion features "green walls, solar cells on the rooftop and what is being billed as the world's biggest "non-column space," according to state media. In addition, the "5,000 metre2 green walls will be the largest ecological walls in the world."

The roof's solar energy system can generate 2.8 million kWh per year - or "enough electricity for 2,500 Shanghai families for a year."

Construction of the Theme Pavilion was completed in 688 days. Design firms "from China, the Netherlands and Germany" will now begin work on the interior after the upcoming national holiday ready for test operations on 1st January.

The pavilion will "have exhibitions about the relationship between humans and cities and the entire planet." These include five sub-pavilions - Urban Dwellers, Urban Beings, Urban Planets, Urban Footprints and Urban Dreams.
