Ngaruwanajirri is an indigenous owned, non-profit organisation based at Wurrumiyanga, an aboriginal community on Bathurst Island. The community, which lies 80km north of Darwin and is accessible through a twice daily air service and ferries to Darwin. It has a store, social club, health clinic and primary and secondary schools and is surrounded by bushland and a short distance to a beach.
Founded in 1994 at ‘The Keeping Place’, Wurrumiyanga, Ngaruwanajirri is a Tiwi word meaning “helping one another”. The art centre provides a supportive and safe space for artists with a disability to come together and create their own individual and inspiring art, allowing them to participate in the same activities as other Tiwi artists. Art created includes natural ochre paintings on canvas and paper, batik on silk, lino prints on paper and ironwood carvings.
Ngaruwanajirri currently provides a service for up to 15 artists. It is a highly respected indigenous art centre that maintains relationships with commercial galleries and public institutions around Australia, operates a regular national exhibitions schedule and featured as a finalist in this years Wynne Prize.
Ngaruwanajirri values creativity, innovation and excellence and aims to professionally support Tiwi artists in establishing and developing their work.
Working with the Ngaruwanajirri Inc. Executive Committee, the Manager will be responsible for the effective operation of the art centre.
A two bedroom house is provided rent free and a car is available for limited private use.
