Originally scheduled to commence before Christmas, the $20.5 million stage one redevelopment will be one of the biggest upgrades the City of Mandurah has undertaken and the Council has elected to go with a company full of aquatic centre construction experience.
Perkins has completed a number of aquatic projects in Western Australia including the Beatty Park, Murray and Craigie Leisure Centres along with the Balga Aquatic Centre.
The redevelopment features a new indoor aquatic playground, new clubroom facilities, a 50 metre outdoor pool and refurbishment of the existing 25 metre pool.
A potential budget shortfall of $894,000 for the project may result in the deletion of spectator seating and a pool boom to the outdoor 50 metre pool. However, a report by Council Director of Works and Services Allan Claydon suggests that "such changes would reduce the operational functionality and flexibility of key elements of the project and for these reasons are not recommended."
Once completed in late 2015, the aquatic redevelopment will increase the water space from 900 metre2 to more than 2,400 metre2, catering for the future needs of Mandurah's fast-growing population.
