Work progresses on YMCA Broken Hill Integrated Wellness Centre

Work progresses on YMCA Broken Hill Integrated Wellness Centre
June 15, 2018

The new $5.4 million YMCA Broken Hill Integrated Wellness Centre remains on track for completion by the end of the year with major excavation and demolition works complete and foundational and structural work about to commence.

YMCA NSW was awarded $3.9 million from the NSW Government under the Restart NSW Resources for Regions program in January last year to redevelop the site into a wellness centre and appointed Hutchinson Builders to undertake the work in April 2018.

Over recent weeks more than 600 tonnes of materials have been removed from the site and the delicate process of transforming the historic former German club into the new reception and café area is well underway.

YMCA Project Manager Randall Howard explained “we’re delighted with the progress that has been made in the last four weeks and the project remains on track in terms of the program and key milestones.

“We’d like to acknowledge the work of Hutchinson Builders and many local subcontractors to date, particularly for the care demonstrated through the preservation of the heritage areas throughout the former German Club.

Local companies have been engaged to work on the project as part of a commitment to procuring local resources, with Howard adding “we’ve reported more than 2,300 work hours on site and a further 120 of those hours through Indigenous participation.

“That effort will only increase going forward as the foundation and structural work commences in the coming weeks.”

The new YMCA Integrated Wellness Centre will deliver significant health and wellbeing benefits to the Broken Hill community, with expanded programs and services, and will create at least 17 new jobs, including three for Indigenous people.

YMCA NSW has been involved with the Broken Hill community for 100 years, and more than half of the not for profit’s locations are in rural and regional areas.
