read moreA pared-back program has been announced for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with hockey, rugby sevens and diving not to be included.
The slimmed down Glasgow program in 2026 will feature just 10 events when it is held in Scotland from 23rd July 23 to 2nd August 2026.
The Games, relocated to Scotland after Victoria's withdrawal as host in July of 2023 when then-premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews cited financial constraints.
Other sports to be left out of the Glasgow program include cricket, badminton, beach volleyball, mountain biking, rhythmic gymnastics, squash and table tennis.
Athletics and swimming were the only sports guaranteed a spot on the program, which also includes track cycling, weightlifting, 3x3 basketball and lawns bowls -- all of which include a para equivalent.
Netball, artistic gymnastics, judo and boxing round out the chosen 10 sports.
The omission of Field Hockey is noted as the sport has been on every program since Kuala Lumpur in 1998, and Australia's Kookaburras and Hockeyroos have won a combined 14 medals, including seven straight golds for the men's team.
Diving has also been at every edition dating back to the 1930 Empire Games, and road cycling had featured since 1938.
