Single body to oversee Sydney’s major venues network
Having acquired Sydney's ANZ Stadium in the middle of last year, the NSW Government is moving to consolidate how NSW's major venues are overseen.
The move that will see the boards of Stadium Australia Group, that oversees ANZ Stadium, and Venues NSW consolidated into one board is now a step closer with the Sporting Venues Authorities Amendment Bill 2017 now passed through NSW Parliament.
NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the amendments to the Sporting Venues Authorities Act 2008 permit full NSW Government control and governance of ANZ Stadium to realise the full benefits of the state owned stadia network.
Minister Ayres stated "the NSW Government is getting on with the job of delivering the $1.6 billion stadia package, the biggest investment in sport and major event infrastructure in NSW since the 2000 Sydney Olympics
“The acquisition of ANZ Stadium on 1 July 2016 has allowed the NSW Government to streamline governance of Government-owned sporting venues to improve coordination and commercial outcomes.
“The amendments allow the consolidation of ANZ Stadium into Venues NSW and ensure other benefits including the attraction of events, enhancing amenity and sporting outcomes including professional sport pathways.
“Venues NSW will concentrate on the delivery of the new Western Sydney Stadium at Parramatta and the business case for the redevelopment of ANZ Stadium as well as opportunities at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle and WIN Stadium in Wollongong.”
Minister Ayres added that the Bill will ensure that ANZ Stadium members’ rights remain intact, and the ANZ Stadium operator, VenuesLive negotiated contracts including naming rights and other valuable assets, remain current.
