read moreJust months after the opening of the new SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Adelaide swimmers can now choose from two major aquatic centres with the reopening of the Adelaide Aquatic Centre.
Reopened on Monday, after a $6 million renovation project, the rejuvenated Centre features a modern new roof and a refreshed look and feel throughout much of the Centre.
The upgraded facility also boasts a new fitness centre, including $250,000 of Nautilus cardio and Nitro strength from The Fitness Generation and VersaClimber machines manufactured and supplied by VersaClimber Australia.
The pools, spas and saunas are now available for use and all programs are up and running, including term four of Swim School. The Swim School now has more places available with a more streamlined enrolment process having been introduced.
Speaking at the reopening of the 40-year-old Centre, acting Lord Mayor of Adelaide David Plumridge explained "the Centre is much-loved by the people of Adelaide and it's exciting to see this first stage of its transformation into a regional leisure and community centre completed. We're aiming for it to continue to be a fantastic facility for all ages to enjoy."
Adelaide City Councillor Susan Clearihan added that "the roof's unique and contemporary design and bright panels lets the sunshine in, creating a light and airy environment that has given the Centre a real boost."
During the upgrade, which began in March this year, swim schools and squads moved permanently from the North Adelaide facility to the new SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
Despite this, Swimming SA General Manager Craig Hobart said the city swimming facility would still play an integral role in supporting the state's up-and-coming swimmers in the metropolitan area.
Hobart told Adelaide Now "swimming is more than just standing behind the blocks and diving in ... there is a whole range the sport takes in, that includes learning to swim, sport and recreation."
Councillor Clearihan believes that the Adelaide metropolitan area will "absolutely" be able to support two swimming centres.
"The elite swimmers have gone to Marion, but there are still lots of local lap swimmers, schools and clubs who will continue to use the centre.
"We're looking to turn the centre into a regional, community, leisure and fitness centre."
Adelaide City Council Active City Program Manager Andrew MacDonald adds that "the steam room has been refitted and new bi-fold windows have been installed in the spa area so people can look out onto the gardens. The members' change rooms have also been renovated,"
The pools have not been changed but there has been some maintenance work on the joints and tiles.
MacDonald adds "as the elite athletes are now using the State Aquatic Centre at Marion for training, there is more room available in our pools for Swim School as well as more lanes for lap swimming.
"There is new fitness centre equipment and increased hours as well as more fitness classes. The fresh swim shop fit-out houses the latest range of Speedo swimwear and staff have stylish new uniforms."
