Redeveloped Burnie Aquatic Centre reopens

Redeveloped Burnie Aquatic Centre reopens
October 21, 2016

After an extended construction period, the Burnie Aquatic Centre has been officially opened.

The newly-designed centre features an indoor eight-lane 25-metre learn-to-swim and lap pool providing access regardless of season or weather along with a seasonal outdoor 50-metre pool and children’s splash pad.

Welcoming the launch of the new facility, Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman stated “the Burnie community is to be congratulated for successfully driving the redevelopment of the Burnie Aquatic Centre.

“This has been a community-driven project and I commend the Burnie City Council and its Aquatic Centre Working Group on its delivery.

“The (facility offers) improved access to the healthy and active lifestyle options (and) helps us to meet our goal to make Tasmania’s population the healthiest in Australia.”

Explaining the Healthy Tasmania Five Year Strategic Plan Premier Hodgman added that the Plan “supports people from all walks of life to become more aware, interested, engaged and more in control of their own health and wellbeing.

“It also fosters community connectedness, bringing people together to support each other toward better health and that’s something the Burnie Aquatic Centre redevelopment can do.”

The work was undertaken by Tasmanian company Stubbs Constructions with project costs shared by the Tasmanian and Federal Governments (contributing $3 million each) and Burnie City Council funding of $2 million.
