Record participants in Womens Only swim program at Cannington Leisureplex
Royal Life Saving Society of Western Australia (RLSSWA) has welcomed record number of participants in its Women’s Only Swim and Survive program held at the Cannington Leisureplex.
The program aims to provide a culturally appropriate setting for women from different backgrounds to come together and take part in beginner and advanced swimming and water safety classes.
55 women from a range of cultural backgrounds, including Afghan, Chinese, Indian, African, Iranian and Vietnamese, took part, with more than half of them learning to swim for the very first time.
People from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities are over-represented in drowning statistics, with 50 drowning deaths in WA involving members of the CaLD community in the past five years. This accounts for 37% of all drowning deaths.
RLSSWA offers Women’s Only Swim and Survive at the Cannington Leisureplex, Leisurepark Balga, and The Swim School Merriwa during each school term.
The program is supported by the Office of Multicultural Interests.
