read moreSunshine Coast Council has granted preliminary approval for Sunshine Park, the planned $90 million waterpark to be built on a 24-hectare site at Glenview.
Planned to include one of the world’s largest surf wave pools, along with lagoons and waterslides, the proposal from the Waterplay Pty Ltd consortium also includes a mix of hotel and cabin-style accommodation, which will be capped at 247 rooms.
The latest of a series of plans to develop a waterpark on the Sunshine Coast, Waterplay Pty Ltd’s proposal has been boosted the stellar performance ot the Wet’n’Wild Sydney waterpark (pictured) since its opening in late 2013 and is intended to compete with the Gold Coast's Wet'n'Wild and WhiteWater World.
This week’s decision by Sunshine Coast Council permitted the site, which was previously used by the Queensland Government for work on the SEQ Water Grid, to be used as a tourist attraction and resort complex.
Individual elements of the waterpark will still need to pass local planning laws.
Following the Council decision, Sunshine Park released a statement that read “the developers will now commence detailed masterplanning for the project which will include finalising the configuration of all elements within the park, technical specifications and the proposed staged construction timetable.”
The Council supported the project because of the expected economic benefits.
A report by Council officers explained “an outdoor, water-based attraction is consistent with the natural values and key lifestyle attributes of the Sunshine Coast.
"The proposal to co-locate the waterpark with visitor accommodation is a point of difference to the majority of the existing tourist attractions on the Sunshine Coast."
