Police issue wristbands for child safety at the Ekka

Police issue wristbands for child safety at the Ekka
August 6, 2016

Police are urging parents and carers to avoid losing children at the Ekka by taking up the offer of free wristbands and organising a meeting point should they become separated.

Acting Queensland Police Minister, Dr Anthony Lynham and North Brisbane District Officer Chief Superintendent Brent Carter launched the initiative which is celebrating its 10th successful year at the Ekka.

In 2015, the program ensured 70 children lost at the Ekka were reunited with their caregivers sooner.

Dr Lynham stated “all parents know how distressing it can be for themselves and their children when they are separated, particularly at such a crowded event.

“Police expect about 30% of the Ekka’s 10 day annual average attendance of 400,000 to be children.

“It’s easy to be enticed by sideshow alley, the Ferris Wheel, fairy floss and strawberry sundaes as soon as you enter the showgrounds.

“But I encourage parents to remember their children’s safety is a priority and pick up a free wristband from the Exhibition Police Station first.”

Chief Superintendent Carter said the initiative had been a proven success for many years, and about 50,000 wristbands were given out last year.

He added “Police encourage parents to know where their children are at all times.”

Schools or community groups bringing large groups of children to the Ekka are encouraged to register their attendance with police at the wristband marquee at the Ekka Police Station.

This will enable police to quickly contact the relevant carers, should a child become separated from the group.

Dr Lynham said that on arrival at the Ekka parents should show their children where the police station is, teach them how to identify a police officer and explain that they need to find a police officer if they become lost.
