Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre reopens after five-month repair

Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre reopens after five-month repair
May 14, 2018

Christchurch’s Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre has reopened after a five-month closure for "much needed" earthquake repairs.

Closed since December, work at the Centre has included deferred maintenance and work that Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sports Operations Manager Nigel Cox explains will "freshen the pools up".

The steam room, sauna, spa and changing rooms have all been refurbished and include new cubicles, benches and toilets. In addition, the main pool has a new liner and the pool hall has been redecorated.

Non-slip Traxite flooring has been installed in the hall and the heating and ventilation has been upgraded for the learn-to-swim area.

Cox advises "thousands of people use Pioneer's pools each year, so this upgrade is a big deal.

"People have been visiting other facilities for their regular swim, but now we're back in business and the team ... can't wait to welcome everyone back."

Both Pioneer and Jellie Park recreation and sport centres suffered minor damage in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The Council carried out engineering assessments at the time that showed both facilities were safe and could remain open to support the community in the post-quake environment.
