read moreOlder members at Essence Fitness in the Perth suburb of Claremont have been benefitting from the introduction of the Living Longer, Living Stronger seniors activity program gym.
The classes at the stand-alone, 17-year-old local gym improve strength, balance, aerobic capacity and general fitness for people aged over 50 years.
Commenting on the popularity of the program, Essence Fitness Manager Mike Price told Perth’s Western Suburbs Weekly newspaper “nearly all our clients are from Nedlands and Claremont, but they come from further for the Living Longer, Living Stronger sessions.”
The attendees participate in 30-minutes of group exercise, before each has 30-minutes of personal activities. The oldest to participate was a 96-year-old woman last year, but most are aged in their 70s.
Attendees must have their GP’s approval to participate and they are assessed by gym staff before any personal fitness program.
Living Longer Living Stronger is an evidence based program that encourages and supports change in the health and fitness sectors to achieve improved health, quality of life and fitness for people aged over 50 years.
The program seeks to maximise opportunities for people to engage in affordable, high quality, results orientated, strength training programs over the longer term. It also seeks to optimise the social engagement of participants; both to foster compliance with the training program and to minimise the social isolation frequently experienced by those seniors with poor health.
Developed and tested in Victoria from 1999, there are now over 110 providers working in collaboration with COTA Victoria to provide individualised training programs. Introduced into Western Australia in 2004, it currently provides quality, individualised exercise programs at over 50 locations.
