read moreThe value of the Perth Arena in attracting interstate and overseas visitors has been confirmed by newly released research that shows more than 275,000 people have travelled from outside of Western Australia to see an event at the venue since 2012 opening, spending more than $150 million in the local economy.
Tourism research released to coincide with the third anniversary of Perth Arena’s opening shows 278,000 people have visited Perth for the purpose of attending an event at the venue.
The findings by leading research agency Repucom state that out-of-town visitors to Perth Arena have spent $151 million in the local community.
Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the data confirmed Perth Arena as a key contributor to tourism in Western Australia and the local economy.
Minister Davies stated “13% of the total Perth Arena attendees are visitors to Perth, which is an average of over 1,000 people per event (while) certain events such as Bon Jovi attract as high as 30% of the crowd from outside Western Australia.”
The research found that half of interstate and overseas visitors to Perth Arena included a visit to regional Western Australia.
Minister Davies added “it is great for our tourism industry that half of Perth Arena’s visiting fans chose to extend their stay and travelled outside Perth to as far as Kununurra.
“Western Australia has a lot to offer visitors and infrastructure such as Perth Arena and its events attract people to experience our beautiful state.
“90% of visitors said their experience at Perth Arena made them want to come back and see more of WA and are now recommending the State to friends and family.”
Perth Arena’s interstate and overseas ticket holders are staying for short periods and spending three times more than the average tourist per day.
The majority of visitors to Perth Arena from outside the state came from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and South East Asia while more than 65,000 people from regional Western Australia visit Perth Arena each year.
The Tourism Council of Western Australia (TCWA) predicted last year that when the the Perth Stadium opens in 2018 it will bring a large numbers of extra visitors to Western Australia each year.
Upcoming events at the Perth Arena include Cold Chisel, Neil Diamond, Oprah, Hugh Jackman and the Hopman Cup.
The Perth Arena, which is owned by VenuesWest and managed by AEG Ogden, opened its doors in 2012 and has issued 2.5 million tickets to 253 major events.
