Newly opened Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre enjoys successful first summer
Including a range of environmentally friendly innovations, the newly opened Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre has enjoyed a successful first few months of operations.
Hornsby Shire Council's new $27 million facility operates a 100kW natural gas fired Cogeneration System installed and commissioned by Simons Green Energy that reduces its electricity demand and carbon output.
The system provides a large portion of the electricity demand with the Centre utilising waste-heat generated by the engine to provide hot water for the facilities and for heating the swimming pools.
Replacing the former Hornsby Aquatic Centre, which closed in 2010, the new facility had originally been scheduled to open in early 2014.
However, following the liquidation of the company supplying the steel trusses that were to form the skeleton of the centre in 2103, opening of the Centre was delayed until August last year.
The opening of the Centre continued a strange recent phenemonena of significant events in the aquatic sector not being communicated, with even the presence of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott at the Centre’s official opening in late November last year seeing Hornsby Shire Council communicate this significant event.
The Council had much to celebrate in developing the centre, borrowing just $2 million to fund its construction – backed by $25 million of its own funds.
NSW MP for Hornsby Matt Kean commended this good financial planning, stating “the Hornsby community now has pool and leisure centre to be proud of, which will be used by local residents and visitors for decades to come.
Designed by Peter Hunt Architect and built by ADCO Constructions, the Centre features:
• A heated, eight-lane 50-metre outdoor pool suitable for lap swimming and water polo
• Outdoor seating for 500 spectators with provision for temporary seating for a further 300 spectators
• A heated, 10-metre by 25-metre indoor pool for learn-to-swim activities
• A heated leisure pool with zero-depth entry leading to a walking zone
• A ground floor multi-purpose room suitable for crèche purposes
• Changing and showering facilities with separate spaces for families and groups
• A kiosk accessible from inside the centre and the adjacent Hornsby Park
• A first floor multi-purpose room & meeting room for dry recreation and club activities
• Office space for the operation and administration
• Parking for more than 100 vehicles
• Two lifts to provide access to all levels of the complex for people with access needs.
A statement from ADCO Constructions on the project read “this project incorporates a suspended main pool deck above under-croft car parking that provides not only an amazing community and aquatic facility but incredible views of the surrounding Berrowa Bushland Park.”
