read moreNewcastle's The Forum aquatic and fitness facility has re-opened its doors after a major refurbishment of the gymnasium at its University site.
The $600,000 redevelopment includes an improved gym floor layout with new cardio and strength equipment including plate loaded machines, additional treadmills, cross trainers and upright bikes, and new functional training equipment including an eight station matrix system.
The refurbishment also incorporated significant environmental improvements which include the installation of energy efficient lighting that will provide a saving of 35% in energy consumption, coupled with a daylight sensor which will automatically eliminate up to 45% of the gym lighting, utilising natural light during the day.
A complete change in the interior design of the gym has resulted in a sleek industrial look that is contemporary and visually stimulating.
NUsport Chief Executive Chris Hicks, said the latest refurbishment was part of The Forum's commitment to providing University students, staff and alumni as well as the wider community with first class facilities.
Hicks explained "The Forum is one of the region's largest health and fitness facilities and we pride ourselves on making sure our product is of the highest standard.
"We work with members and our equipment suppliers to provide a facility that meets changing needs in line with industry trends.
"The refurbishment includes upgraded equipment and technology, designed to improve the long-term health and wellbeing of members and guests."
To minimise disruption, the refurbishment was completed in just nine days between Saturday 6th and Sunday 14th July.
It includes the extension of the existing strength training zone to more than 500 metress, upgraded 51 piece cardio room with new 60" LED LCD televisions and a complete refit of the gymnasium flooring.
The Forum University and Harbourside facilities are managed by NUsport, a not-for-profit organisation.
NUsport is also responsible for the University of Newcastle's sporting activities including management of sporting clubs, ovals, Elite Athlete support and sport scholarships as well as hosting the prestigious University of Newcastle Sports Awards each year.
