New Sydney community and cultural precinct set to open

New Sydney community and cultural precinct set to open
May 18, 2018

The Green Square community and cultural precinct, built on the site of the former South Sydney Hospital, is set to the public this month.

The $32 million precinct is in the heart of the Green Square town centre the suburb of Zetland and was commissioned by the City of Sydney and includes a creative hub – in a three-storey former nurses quarters - with artists’ studios, workshops, galleries and community spaces.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the facilities, which also include a community shed, childcare centre, park and public artwork, would make an important contribution to an area that will soon be home to more than 61,000 people.

Lord Mayor Moore advised “Green Square is one of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in the country, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure it develops into a world-class urban neighbourhood with the services and facilities its residents and workers need.

“We have committed $540 million over the next 10 years to the Green Square town centre, including our stunning new community and cultural precinct that will sit at the centre of the development.”

The precinct will be powered by a new green infrastructure system housed in a former administration building. A water treatment facility will supply recycled storm water for flushing toilets, green space irrigation and cooling towers. Two new water storage tanks will also be located on site.

Other community development in the the $8 billion Green Square precinct includes the Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre which will be the largest aquatic centre to be built in Sydney in nearly 20 years as well as a new public park is under construction on a disused block of land in nearby Waterloo.

When fully developed, Green Square will be one of Australia’s most densely populated urban areas with its 61,000 people living in 30,500 new homes

The Joynton Avenue Creative Centre will be officially launched on 26th May.
