The $1.3 million works program included all new drainage works, irrigation works, complete sub base soil works and laying of brand new turf, undertaken by Melbourne-based HG Sports Turf.
Welcoming the readiness of the new surface for the Newcastle Jets’ first home game of the A-League season, NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation Stuart Ayres explained "the resurfacing brings the turf into line with the rest of the excellent, international standard facilities at the venue.
“The construction team have done an amazing job to complete the project in such a short time frame.
"This isn’t a new layer of grass, this has been a complete reconstruction of the playing surface.”
The first major development to the often criticised Hunter Stadium pitch in 15 years, Minister Ayres now believes that "the Hunter Stadium playing surface is now comparable to some of the best playing surfaces in Australia (and) will also provide a lasting legacy for Hunter Stadium and its regular users, including the Jets and Newcastle Knights."
The work has coincided with Hunter Stadium preparing to host four matches in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, including a semi-final and the third and fourth play-off.
HG Sports Turf has also recently completed the installation of new turf surfaces at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium and the MCG.
