Dunedin City Council has announced the opening of a new modular pump track at Mayfield Avenue Playground, adjacent to Wakari School.

The DCC began work on the pump track and adjacent off-street car parking at Mayfield Avenue in early December 2024.

Dunedin City Councillor Marie Laufiso notes “We hope the city's tamariki and rakatahi who are bikers and scooter riders will really enjoy the pump track, an exciting addition to the Wakari neighbourhood."

“The low-maintenance, all-weather modular track is similar to pump tracks installed at Marlow Park and Waikouaiti School.”

“The pump track is the culmination of the hard work of many people – including our staff and various contractors who have worked on the project.”

“We thank the community, including those at Wakari School, for their input and enthusiasm in discussing options for the site.”

The DCC’s Play Space Plan, adopted in 2021, identified the need for more challenging play areas for children aged between 10 and 14 – including BMX and pump tracks.

Elements of the project include the modular track components, artificial turf, paving and fencing, earthworks and drainage, as well as the parking area comprising 12 standard car parks and one fully accessible car park.
