Manly Council moves forward with Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Swim Centre development

Manly Council is pushing ahead with the development of its controversial plans for the Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Swim Centre, aiming to create a new community space and aquatic and recreation centre for the Manly area on Sydney’s northern beaches.
Upgrading the ageing existing facility, the design by Tompkins MDA Architects integrates the existing outdoor pools with new indoor pools and gym, filled with light from retractable walls that open to the northern sun and outdoor areas.

The design includess:
• A 25 metre, eight lane heated lap pool with ramp entry and spectator seating for 150 people.
• A program pool for exercise and rehabilitation with ramp entry.
• A fun children’s play and leisure pool with a beach entry.
• A spa pool, sauna and steam room facilities.
• Administration offices.
• Gymnasium, group fitness and wellbeing rooms.
• A Kiosk.
• A crèche for families.
• A separate community building in LM Graham Reserve containing change rooms, public toilets, a state of the art co generation energy plant, storage and a bus shelter.
• On-site parking for 54 cars including four accessible and two parent with pram spaces.
• Landscaped gardens.
Works on the project are due to commence on 24th November 2014
While construction is underway, the existing facility’s outdoor pools will remain open to the community, although entrance and reception areas will be relocated.
