John Coates re-elected International Council of Arbitration For Sport President
Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates is to remain as President of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) following his re-election at ICAS' 43rd meeting in Lausanne.
Coates has been a member of ICAS since the creation of the Council in 1994 and became its third President in 2010, will now remain as ICAS President until 2018.
Coates is also a Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee.
The meeting also saw the election of lawyers Michael Lenard of the United States and Slovenia’s Tjasa Andrée-Prosenc as ICAS Vice-Presidents.
Composed of 20 international lawyers from both the sports movement and from the arbitration world or international judiciary, ICAS is responsible for facilitating the resolution of sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation conducted by independent arbitrators.
ICAS also manages the administration and finances of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and sets up special CAS divisions during multi-sport events, such as the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, as well as the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championships.
CAS includes 330 arbitrators and 60 mediators from 90 different countries and registers more than 400 cases every year.
