International recognition for cycling’s Luminaries

International recognition for cycling’s Luminaries
June 6, 2014

Australian and international winners of the Cycling Luminaries Awards 2014 have been recognised at the World’s premier cycling conference, Velo-city Global in Adelaide.

The special international edition of the Cycling Promotion Fund’s Cycling Awards were presented by key cycling leaders throughout the Velo-city conference.

The awards were presented in the following categories:

• First Nations – Australia

• Cycling for the next Generation

• Pimp my Bike –Cycle Chic

• Bike Culture and Behaviour Change

• Leadership – Australia

• Leadership – International

• Built Environment and Urban Design.

Cycling Promotion Fund General Manager Peter Bourke explained the unique opportunity to celebrate Australia’s cycling luminaries in front of an international audience.

Bourke stated “it was a great chance to recognise the winners of these Awards in front of the biggest international audience we have ever had in this country.

“Our international delegates saw first-hand the great work being done in Australia to provide more Australians with the opportunity to ride a bike,

“Awards were presented to community cycling programs providing women with the skills to ride a bike, to a school principal in Cairns who is responsible for literally thousands of children riding to school and an indigenous cycling program to name just a few.

“With cities grappling with rapidly spiralling problems of congestion and liveability, and a crisis of chronic lifestyle diseases related to physical inactivity these Awards play their part in increasing awareness of what can be done to increase cycling and make a difference.”

Award winners summary:

First Nations – Australia

• Grant Pinnington – Cycling for Culture (Adelaide): a bicycle ride through Kaurna Country took indigenous and non-indigenous participants on a journey to experience Kaurna culture and language and get a better understanding of the lives of the Kaurna people past and present.

Cycling for the next Generation

• Mark Allen – Bike Bus (Cairns): Over 74% of children in Australia have never ridden to school. Mark Allen engages with the next generation through the Bikebus. Over 100 schools in Queensland now have their own bike bus and QLD legislation has passed to make it possible across the state.

Pimp my Bike –Cycle Chic

• Alice Lewis – Night Brigade (Melbourne): By blurring the boundaries of safety-wear and our everyday wardrobes Night Brigade is creating a visual cycle-culture from the body up.

Bike Culture and Behaviour Change

• Pip Carroll – The Squeaky Wheel (Melbourne): Programs including Pushy Women, Roll up Bicycle Valet Parking, Melbourne Bikefest, cultural tours and rides and training for disadvantaged communities has inspired thousands of people to ride.

Leadership – Australia

• Melvin Mansell – News Corporation (South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania): As a keen cyclist who understands the many opportunities and benefits that getting more South Australians riding provides our community, Melvin has been instrumental in the Advertiser’s community Cycle Safe campaign in partnership with Bike SA.

Leadership – International

• Daniel Kofler: developed BikeCityGuide app and BikeCitizens concept to make cycling safer and more attractive and to motivate people to use their bikes as preferred means of transport.

Built Environment and Urban Design

• National Heart Foundation of Australia – Healthy by Design: a comprehensive framework with design considerations that facilitate ‘healthy planning’, resulting in healthy places for people to live, work and visit.

Velo-city Global 2014 – partner for the Cycling Luminaries Awards

In 2014 the Cycling Luminaries Awards celebrated the ideas and people that are driving the future of local, national and international cycling cultures. Held for the first time in the southern hemisphere, the European Cyclists’ Federation’s Velo-city conference series is widely considered the premier international planning conference for cycling.

The 2014 Cycling Luminaries Awards

• Building on more than a decade of delivering the Bicycling Achievement Awards the Cycling Promotion Fund was proud to join with Velo-City Global 2014 to host the Awards.

• Seven Awards were presented in the categories of Built Environment, Bike Culture, First Nations, Next Generation, Leadership, Cycle Chic and International Leadership.

The Cycling Promotion Fund is an initiative of Bicycle Industries Australia.
