Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre reaches 1 million visitors
Recent weeks have seen Sydney's Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre welcome its 1,000,000th visitor.
This is a significant milestone in the three year history of the City of Sydney's newest aquatic and leisure facility.
The $40 million facility designed by architectural icon Harry Seidler includes a 50 metre pool, leisure pool, program pool, fitness centre, steam room and sauna and café and was officially opened by the honorary Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
Since opening in August, the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre has created a million experiences across programs and services that include:
• Swimming lessons and water safety classes;
• Fitness classes and personal training;
• Teenagers and school groups participating in 'Teen Gym' classes to combat childhood obesity;
• 'PrYme Movers' classes enabling seniors to battle arthritis, osteoporosis and create social connections in the community; and
• Affordable family programs.
General Manager Adrian Heffernan explains that "in managing the facility in partnership with the City of Sydney, the YMCA is proud of the high quality of programs and services the centre offers local residents.
"We look forward to contributing to a happier and healthier community with another 1 million visitors in the coming years."
The Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre is located at the corner of Harris and William Henry Streets in the Sydney suburb of Ultimo.
