read moreFollowing on from its recent attainment of Accessibility Accreditation through the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC), the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) has released its first Visual Welcome Story in collaboration with Autism Queensland.
The Visual Welcome Story supports visitors of all abilities in feeling prepared for their visit and welcome to GCCEC. It is a step-by-step guide to accessing GCCEC and a description of what visitors may experience at the venue. The story is an additional resource to the venue’s Accessibility Guide.
GCCEC’s Welcome Story offers visitors an overview of their entire journey within the venue, from arrival to departure. It provides detailed information about transportation options, the appearance of the venue and its spaces, the friendly faces visitors will encounter, quieter areas, bathroom facilities, and much more.
According to Autism Queensland, approximately 1 in 5 Australians have a disability, approximately 1 in 7 people identify as neurodivergent and 1 in 70 Australians are autistic.
Pam Macrossan Autism Queensland Chief Executive said that there is a growing recognition by businesses and community organisations of the value of universal supports to ensure all customers are included and welcome.
Macrossan notes “Welcome stories are designed to help visitors prepare for their journey to a new venue or event, making them feel comfortable and welcome in the space.”
Adrienne Readings General Manager of GCCEC added “we have always worked hard to ensure that the convention centre is accessible to all types of visitors and we are proud to add resources such as the Welcome Story.
“This year, Queensland’s Year of Accessible Tourism is helping ensure that the state is a destination for people of all abilities, and we want to help lead the way for venues.”
