Flooding causes closure of Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Flooding causes closure of Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
April 5, 2024

The East Coast of Australia is currently being impacted by heavy rainfall from Queensland to New South Wales with the extreme weather causing intense flooding to the Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Northern River,s was forced to close on Thursday afternoon after heavy rainfall left the park submerged in brown water.

Posting on Facebook the wildlife park advised “within just thirty minutes, half of our sanctuary was submerged underwater. But amidst the chaos, our dedicated teams—keepers, administrators, and hospital staff—sprang into action to ensure the safety of our beloved animals.

“Despite their heroic efforts, we're now facing significant challenges. We've lost vital perimeter fences, endured damage to enclosures, pathways, and buildings, and the threat of more rain hangs over us.

“'As a result, The Sanctuary will remain closed until further notice as we work tirelessly to assess risks and restore our haven for wildlife."

The park has called for support and donations adding “in times like these, the support of our community is invaluable. That's why we're reaching out to you for help. Your donation, no matter the size, will make a world of difference. It'll go towards repairing damages, providing food and care for our animals, covering transportation costs, and much more.

“Please, join us in our efforts by donating to The Sanctuary today. Every contribution counts, and every act of kindness brings us one step closer to healing and restoration.

“Thank you for your unwavering support. We're immensely grateful for each and every one of you.”
