read moreA sod-turning event has marked the countdown to the start of construction on the redevelopment at Totally Workwear Stadium, Langlands Park, home of the Brisbane Tigers.
Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Cameron Dick was on hand yesterday at the ceremony alongside Brisbane Tigers Chief Executive Brian Torpy in advance of construction, by iQ Construct, starting in the coming weeks.
Expected to be completed by the end of November the $10.2 million project has received a contribution of $1.1million from the Queensland Government.
The key part of the redevelopment will be the relocation and refurbishment of the venue’s 1937 heritage grandstand which will be relocated behind the goal post at the southern end of the field with the western wing of the stand to be transformed into a full wet bar and the eastern wing to contain amenities.
In addition, the venue’s Heritage Pavilion, which dates from 1933, will be re-located between the heritage grandstand and the current scoreboard.
The redevelopment will also include an extension of the current gymnasium to include a new ticket box and ground entry and a new double-story building on the western side of the ground along with a theatre, board room, corporate suits and meeting rooms which will be available for community groups to utilise.
Torpy explained that “the redevelopment of the grounds is extremely important for the club and the community.
“The current change rooms were constructed in the 1960s and 1980s and have served the community well for more than 60 years, but now need an upgrade to be of state and national level competition standard.”
“The provision of a first-class training and playing facilities at Totally Workwear Stadium will complement the Langlands Park sporting precinct, which will include swimming pools and a 24-7 commercial gym.
“The club already has a first-class playing surface, and the new buildings and stands will provide a 4000-person boutique rectangular stadium, three kilometres from the CBD and a stone’s throw from the Gabba.”
Torby added that, when complete “Totally Workwear Stadium will be a great facility, for not only for rugby league through state-wide competition games, school competitions and carnivals, local games and finals, international university games, interstate rugby league games but also for other community sports and events, such as Queensland Gridiron grand finals and community Christmas carols.”
The stadium is frequently used by NRL teams when playing in Brisbane, as well as the Queensland Maroons and Australian Kangaroos.
