Community consultation highlights key design changes for Jindabyne Skatepark
May 13, 2022

Snowy Monaro Regional Council has received much community feedback on the future of Jindabyne Skatepark following a month-long consultation between 25th February and 20th March 2022 which highlighted key changes that should be made to the proposed skate park design.

The Snowy Monaro community told Council that the park design should be redrawn to reflect more of an open skate park design – as represented in draft plans and skate park features provided by the community. All examples of skate park features and community draft plans provided to Council align with the survey results.

Overall, the survey responses highlighted four key changes:

  • Addition of more ‘street’ and plaza style features with an open skate park design
  • Inclusion of more seating and shading areas for parents to supervise children
  • Removal of the pump track feature from the design
  • Concrete all dirt sections, combining the entire space

More than 50% of feedback commented on the functionality of the design, stressing the need for more basic progression features with simple street park design and layout.

Comments highlight that the pump track and bowl feature dominate the space within the proposed park design, with major concern for safety in collision areas, especially with less skate aware users and spectators.

The post-consultation report supports that there is a clear need to redesign the skate park in line with more street and plaza style features and the reduction or removal of the pump track.

The community consultation highlights how big a difference community involvement makes to important projects in the Snowy Monaro.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council was successful in attracting funding for the refurbishment of the Jindabyne Skate Park through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, co-funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.

In 2018 Convic were commissioned to develop a concept plan as part of the first stage in the refurbishment project for the Jindabyne Skate Park. The project aims to be undertaken between October 2022 and June 2023.
