Children benefit from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary’s Conservation Trail

Children benefit from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary’s Conservation Trail
January 27, 2017

An interactive experience that aims to enhance young visitors’ knowledge of bilbies, brush-tailed rock wallabies and the Kroombit tinker frog, has proved a success since being launched by the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary last year.

The Kids on Conservation Trail has been designed to educate children about some of Australia’s endangered wildlife while exposing them to the Sanctuary’s conservation programs.

The Trail at the Gold Coast attraction takes young visitors a fun stamp collection activity, in which kids collect stamps from over 12 locations. In each place, they are given the chance to learn a little about an endangered animal or about one of the Sanctuary’s conservation programs.

Located on 27 hectares, the sanctuary, which has one of the largest collections of animals native to Australia, has also announced the establishment of 15,000 gum trees and a purpose-built koala gum shed to store koala fodder.

With tall eucalypt forests and low eucalypt woodland being the koalas’ natural habitat, the Sanctuary hopes that Initiatives like this will help hospitals and sanctuaries in their efforts to protect the wild koalas.

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation will also be introducing the ‘Tree to Me’ program where members and businesses are encouraged to donate towards planting more gum trees.

The Sanctuary has been certified since 2010 at the Advanced Ecotourism level and excels in providing fun and educational experiences to all of its guests through fascinating wildlife shows, displays and adventure tours.

Giving an insight into the Sanctuary's ECO Certification, Tammy Fielding, Conservation Projects Officer at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary explains “Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation are committed to playing an integral role in conservation and education projects to ensure the survival of Australia’s iconic species.

“Advanced Eco Tourism Certification allows Ecotourism Australia to spread the word about these vital projects for Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary with the assurance of our commitment to Conservation efforts and quality environment based education.”
