Changing room upgrades at Moana Pool to commence in September

With Dunedin’s Moana Pool facility being 58 years old, construction of improved and accessible changing facilities will begin at the start of September.

This is the first stage of a three-year project to upgrade Moana Pool. A plan on the next stages will be completed by December 2022. The project is included in the Dunedin City Council’s 10 Year Plan 2021 – 31.

Dunedin City Council Group Manager Parks and Recreation Scott MacLean advises “we’re upgrading Moana Pool because the facility is 58-years-old and equipment and parts of the building are due for replacement.”

The number of first floor changing rooms will increase from nine to 16, including three accessible changing rooms (two with beds and hoists), two large dry changing rooms for groups and eleven family changing rooms – five with showers and six without showers. Four poolside showers will also be added beside the learners’ pool.

All the family and accessible changing rooms and toilets are gender neutral.

Other work includes adding a Just Swim office beside the learners’ pool to create space for the public to discuss swimming lessons with staff.

The west wall of the main pool building will also be strengthened and reclad with a lighter weight material inside and out. The old dive pool and learners’ pool will need to close at times while scaffolding is put up and subsequently dismantled but temporary changing rooms will be available.

As Council makes these improvements there will be some disruption to changing rooms, the learners’ pool and the old dive pool. There will also be reduced parking in the rear carpark during weekdays. The DCC will keep pool users updated about pool closures and other disruptions.
