Call for school swimming funding in Victoria
The Victorian Opposition is calling for the Victorian Government to subsidise school swimming lessons, after an increase in the rate of child drownings.
Five children up to the age of 14 drowned in Victoria last financial year, three more than in the previous 12 months.
The Opposition's sport and recreation spokesman, John Eren, says schools are charging parents about $150 for a course of swimming lessons, resulting in parents opting out because of the high cost.
Oren stated "the Government needs to move very quickly and announce some further funding to make it more affordable for children to be able to take swimming lessons.
"I know that it's part of the curriculum but it's not a compulsory part of the curriculum."
The Victorian Government has defended its commitment to water safety, pointing to a funding boost to the VICSWIM holiday program in the 2011-12 budget.
Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty responinded, stating "the Coalition Government committed $1.6 million over four years to improve water safety by increasing the participation of Victorian children in learn-to-swim programs."
