A NSW mother is recovering in hospital after her bungy cord became detached during a 35-metre jump above the Waiau River near Hanmer Springs in New Zealand's South Island.
Kirsty Moulder made the bungy jump with Thrillseekers Adventures from the Waiau Ferry Bridge at the weekend.
After making the jump she was bouncing up for the second time when she broke free from the bungy rope.
She fell about six metres into the icy cold but shallow river and may have hit a rock under the surface, rescuers told New Zealand media.
"She sustained chest and arm injuries to her left side, which took the brunt of the impact into the river," paramedic Dean Brown told the New Zealand Herald.
Moulder was pulled out of the river by Westpac Rescue Helicopter staff and flown to Christchurch Hospital with her husband by her side.
Her husband, Rodney Moulder has since thanked the rescue authorities and adventure tour operators who helped his wife, saying âeveryone has been so helpful, supportive and professional,�? adding âthe people from Thrillseekers Adventures, the Westpac rescue crew and the staff at the hospital have gone out of the way to care for Kirsty and I would like to thank them all.�?
A spokesman for Christchurch-based Wood Scenic Line Ltd, owners of the Thrillseekers Adventures bungy operation has since stated âwe are devastated about the accident at our bungy operation near Hanmer.�?
The spokesmen added that âsince the accident we (have) immediately suspended all operations at the bungy site and they wonât be resumed until thereâs been a full investigation into how the accident happened.
âThis is the first time weâve had an accident like this and the staff there are very upset.
âOur first priority is to find out more about whatâs happened and to make sure any family or friends of the person whoâs been hurt are looked after.�?
