Brisbane venues open their doors to the public
The 2014 Brisbane Open House will once again celebrate the city’s most historic and architecturally unique buildings.
Being held for the fifth time over thw weekend of Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October, the event gives members of the public a rare opportunity to explore the city’s most architecturally diverse, well-designed and historic buildings by gaining free access to more than 100 sites, talks, tours and activities.
Queensland Government Architect, Malcolm Middleton, said the event program represented the best of the city’s built environment and culturally rich suburbs, stating "this is one weekend each year when thousands of Brisbanites and tourists are given rare access into places and spaces, many of which are not generally open to the public."
Building on the success of last year's events, Brisbane Open House has added 35 new buildings of historic and modern architectural importance to the must-see list.
New buildings for the program include the XXXX Brewery, The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground), Port of Brisbane, Brisbane Common Ground, Victoria Barracks and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.
As well as these sites, the public can also gain a rare glimpse into the offices of different design practices including Architectus (Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts), Arkhefield (River Quay and Queensland Theatre Company) and pdt Architects (Suncorp Stadium).
Also on offer is the Speaker’s Series which will bring together influential architects, designers and planners to explore ideas such as heritage buildings, sustainable design and urban rooftops; the Made in Brisbane program which focuses on Brisbane-based boutique makers and manufacturers; a photography competition as well as countless other walking tours, free concerts and family-friendly activities.
