read moreNew research on the intentions of Australians in 2013 shows that 21% are planning a visit to a theme park/attraction in Australia and 8% a park overseas while 25% are going to start a diet, 12% are considering joining a fitness club and that 6% are thinking of doing both.
The research, What Australians are planning to do in 2013? has been conducted by respected market research business Newspoll, Australia's leading public opinion polling company with a reputation for accuracy having correctly called all 55 state and federal elections since its inception in 1985.
Surveying Australians' intentions for 2013, the research shows that a third of adult Australians aged 18 to 64 are going to start looking for a new job this year - the same proportion as is planning a trip overseas.
In terms of products, purchase intent is at 25% for a smartphone, 18% for a car, 15% for a TV and 12% for a tablet.
Findings that impact the leisure industry show:
• A quarter of the Australian adult population aged 18-64 is thinking of visiting a theme/attraction park in 2013.
• 17% are only planning to visit local park(s); 4% are only planning to visit park overseas while 4% are planning to visit both local and overseas parks. This percentage (25%) represents about 3.6 million adult potential visitors (3 million adult intenders for Australian attractions).
• Described as 'classic' New Year's resolutions, 25% of Australians are going to start a diet, 12% are considering joining a fitness club and 6% are thinking of doing both.
•6% of Australians are planning a domestic skiing trip, while 4% plan to ski overseas.
The research was led by Newspoll Account Service Director Frederic Anne, who formerly led the research department at Disneyland Paris.
Anne now plans to undertake further syndicated research on attractions and theme parks - aiming to share the research costs across multiple clients/subscribers who are all interested in tracking the same core metrics in the attractions and theme parks sector in Australia.
Anne explains "when I was running the research department at Disneyland Paris, I found this type of research useful and cost effective and that's why we are now considering launching a syndicated research related to parks in Australia."
The results in What Australians are planning to do in 2013? are based on an online survey that Newspoll conducted at the end of January and in early February, among a representative sample of 1,700 people aged 18-64 living on the East Coast (Victoria, NSW, ACT and Queensland).
