read moreWith Australia having experienced outstanding international success in the canoe sprint discipline, winning a medal at every Olympic Games since 1980, Australian Canoeing has announced its 2014 to 2016 National Pathway Strategy for Canoe Sprint.
The Strategy has been developed to ensure the continuation of international success into the future with Australian Canoeing (AC) creating and supporting high quality sustainable pathways for athletes and coaches, with a clear, evidence-based methodology for the identification and development talent.
Five major initiatives underpin the Canoe Sprint National Pathway Strategy for the short-term period until the 2016 Rio Olympic Games:
1. NATIONAL ELITE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (NEDP)
The NEDP aims to bridge the gap between foundation level participation and elite performance for both athletes and coaches alike. The NEDP addresses five key pathway pillars including skill development, physical development, coach development, athlete profiling and monitoring, and personal excellence and education. The Canoe Sprint NEDP comprises of two components:
A) REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT CENTRES
To emphasise the importance of a high quality daily training environment for optimal pre-elite athlete development, AC will be introducing a Regional Development Centre accreditation initiative. AC Regional Development Centre accreditation will recognise training centres that provide outstanding coaching, equipment, facilities, and training opportunities suitable for pre-elite athletes pursuing a high performance pathway in the canoe sprint discipline. Regional Development Centres will receive both financial and in-kind support from AC to ensure the ongoing provision of a high quality daily training environment and to encourage continuous improvement in program delivery and athlete performance in these centres.
B) STATE DEVELOPMENT SQUADS
NEDP State Development Squads aim to provide regular training and educational opportunities to the top ranked junior and, where relevant, emerging senior athletes in the canoe sprint discipline. Selected athletes will receive high quality coaching and development experiences, including interaction with national team coaches and performance support staff. NEDP State Development Squads will expose athletes to high performance practice environments and behaviours in order to accelerate development and prepare for transition to more advanced stages of the athlete pathway. NEDP State Development Squads will operate on a state-based mini-camps framework.
2. SURF LIFE SAVING AUSTRALIA (SLSA) NEXT WAVE PARTNERSHIP
The SLSA Next Wave Partnership aims to provide surf life saving athletes with an opportunity to pursue an Olympic pathway in a sport which is complementary to their current sporting commitments. The partnership facilitates development opportunities for surf life saving coaches and athletes to improve their surf performance via provision of specialist expertise, technical knowledge, and high performance support. The SLSA Next Wave Partnership comprises of two pathway programs:
A) NEXT WAVE PADDLING SQUADS
The SLSA Next Wave Paddling Squad accreditation program serves to support training groups actively participating in both surf life saving and canoeing competition pathways. Next Wave Paddling Squads recognise training centres that facilitate the transition from surf to kayak, support dual-sport involvement in surf life saving and canoeing activities, and offer high quality coaching expertise and training environments. Accredited Next Wave Paddling Squads will benefit from financial, coaching, craft, and outfitting support.
B) PADDLING CLINICS
To enhance knowledge and execution of basic paddling skills, SLSA hosts free paddling clinics for surf life saving coaches and athletes at surf clubs across the country. These clinics include coach development workshops focussing on topics such as correct technique, equipment, coaching approaches and tools, as well as on-water practical sessions for coaches and athletes together. SLSA Next Wave Paddling Clinics aim to up skill coaches and athletes to improve their surf ski performance, and at the same time introduce participants to the benefits of specific flat water kayak training and opportunities available through AC and our member organisations.
3. AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT (AIS) SPORTS DRAFT
The AIS Sports Draft is a talent transfer program providing fast-track development opportunities to outstanding athletes interested in pursuing an Olympic pathway in a new sport. In 2014/2015, the AIS Sports Draft will search for athletes with the appropriate combination of physical and psychological characteristics to transfer into a range of “speed, power, and agility” sports, including sprint and slalom canoe. Athletes who show they have what it takes to be a potential Olympic champion will be invited to take part in a series of screenings, camps, and workshops to determine their aptitude and potential for success in canoeing. Selected athletes will be integrated into existing pre-elite development squads around the country and will work together with our best coaches and athletes as they begin their journey towards the goal of the 2020 Olympic Games. The AIS Sports Draft also has a significant coach development component, offering coaches of selected athletes opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge in areas such as working with talent transfer athletes and fast-tracking the development of new athletes.
4. NATIONAL COACHING CURRICULUM UPDATE
AC are currently updating the National Coaching Framework and Certification Curriculum for Canoe Sprint. The sustainability of a successful athlete pathway relies heavily on the quantity and quality of coaches within the canoeing community. AC is committed to providing leadership in the content and delivery of coach development opportunities to ensure we have a sufficient and highly skilled workforce to attract, develop, and retain athletes at all stages of the athlete pathway. Updating our current Level 1 and Level 2 Canoe Sprint Coaching Certification Curriculum and refreshing our certification processes and requirements are the first steps in a long-term strategy to improve and enhance coach development within the Canoe Sprint discipline.
5. COACH CONNECT COACH MENTORING PROGRAM
Experiential learning is a critical adjunct to formal coach development opportunities such as workshops, clinics, and courses. Working with an experienced mentor coach in an immersive environment offers an intensive, practical learning opportunity for coaches at all levels. In recognition of the value coach mentoring and experiential learning can provide, AC has established the Coach Connect Program. Coach Connect offers a 12-month mentoring opportunity to one canoe sprint coach per year, who is recognised as having the potential for success as a pre-elite development or high performance coach. The Coach Connect program involves partnering the emerging coach with a suitable AC Senior National Team Coach, and facilitating opportunities for interaction within the mentor and emerging coaches’ home environments. The Coach Connect Mentoring Program also supports the emerging coach to attend one of the professional development opportunities offered through the Australian Institute of Sport Centre for Performance Coaching and Leadership Open Program.
