Work on the transformation of the Burnie Aquatic Centre into a modern aquatic, fitness and recreation facility is nearing completion, with the facility expected to be opened in May.

Set to offer a new eight lane, 25 metre indoor pool coupled with a learn to swim area and an outdoor aquatic playground, the Centre is being integrated with a PCYC facility that will offer a new multi-use gymnasium.

Burnie City Council has also confirmed that Sea-Lyons Aquatics, the long-time operator of the Burnie Aquatic Centre, has been reappointed to run the facility when it reopens.

Commenting on the ongoing management by Sea-Lyons Aquatics, which had managed the aquatic centre for council for more than 30 years, Burnie Mayor Anita Dow stated “it is pleasing to see that, through a competitive tender process, Sea-Lyons have been able to retain their association with council at the site and look forward to delivering an enhanced range of services and activities at the redeveloped facility.

"The company will employ several additional staff to operate the redeveloped centre.

"The management arrangement will see the aquatic activities and programs share space and programs with the PCYC to ensure extended and better outcomes for health and recreation for all the community."

Mayor Dow added that the completed project should also provide good health outcomes for the community, commenting “the project will allow for all members of our community to access the indoor facility all year round.

“This is especially exciting for the younger members of our community who will soon have better access to learn to swim opportunities.”

The $8.8 million has been jointly funded by the Federal and Tasmanian Governments along with the Council.
