Following recent media reports focusing on dissatisfaction with gym membership contracts, new industry chain Virgin Active is launching its Australian clubs with no long-term contracts.

As Virgin's global chief, Sir Richard Branson explains "our research confirms that people are often sold into long-term contracts that don't suit their needs and getting out of them can be both time consuming and expensive.

"So we decided to give people flexible membership options ... and it is up to us to motivate our members to keep coming back."

A recent press statement state that a "relationship with Virgin Active is simple. Members commit to an initial four week period (starting from their first fortnightly payment) which then renews in fortnightly increments. Members can terminate the relationship at any stage by giving three days notice prior to their fortnightly renewal. Importantly, there are no time consuming interviews required before they leave, termination notice can be given via email, fax or by simply completing a form at a Virgin Active health club."

As Virgin Active Managing Director Mark Blackman explains "the simplicity and complete transparency of our memberships, coupled with our great value for money, will set a new benchmark in the health and fitness industry in Australia.

"Every aspect of Virgin Active is designed to help our members achieve their goals and we believe this will keep people coming back. We will provide fantastic facilities and a friendly and fun environment, instead of relying on a contract to keep them with us."

The first Australian Virgin Active health club will open in the Sydney suburb of Frenchs Forest in December.
