Up to $25,000 available for local trail development projects in Western Australia
January 31, 2023

Western Australian local trail development projects are being offered grants of between $5,000 and $25,000 following the release of the WA Strategic Trails Blueprint in October 2022.

With increasing demand for trails across the State - with trails including bushwalking, cycling, horse riding, snorkelling and mountain biking - a consistent and high standard of planning is essential to ensure a sustainable future for the trail industry.

Eligible local governments, community organisations and active recreation clubs are encouraged to apply for funding under the Trail Planning Grants Program, administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

The Western Australian Government's Blueprint vision is that by 2027 Western Australia's trails will connect more people to Country. Applications must align with this vision and ensure their trails project is sustainable, inclusive, and accessible.

They must also align with the State's eight-stage trail development process which champions sustainable trails being developed in the right place, the right way, and for the right reasons.

In the past three years the WA Government has invested heavily in trails which create jobs and boost regional economies, including the $10 million Collie Adventure Trails initiative.

WA Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman shared "My family and I are huge fans of trails and all the social, physical and mental health benefits they offer us.

"WA has some of the greatest trails in the world but for our trail industry to thrive we must encourage a high standard of planning, development, and maintenance, and ensure Aboriginal engagement and cultural values are integrated across all stages.”
