UNSW reopens ‘finest university sporting facilities’
David Phillips Field, home to University of NSW sporting clubs since 1964, has been officially re-opened by Vice-Chancellor Professor Fred Hilmer and former NSW Premier and local member for Heffron, Kristina Keneally.
Following a $10 million redevelopment, UNSW Sport and Recreation General Manager Mark Lockie believes that UNSW now has the "finest university sporting facilities in the state."
Located in Daceyville, the redeveloped grounds include a new synthetic hockey pitch, a multi-use football pitch and four tennis courts.
There are also three natural grass fields which will be used by rugby, football, baseball, ultimate frisbee and touch football in winter and cricket in summer. Lighting has also been significantly upgraded to provide for night time competition use.
The outdoor cricket practice facilities have also been upgraded and there are two new clubhouse buildings with function rooms and a kiosk.
The project incorporates the latest in environmentally sustainable systems, including solar hot water and storm-water harvesting.
Together with UNSW sporting clubs, the grounds will also be used by UNSW Sport and Recreation for its comprehensive school sport programs. The facilities are also used by community and local sports groups.
