Reborn QEII Recreation and Sport Centre opened in Christchurch

Reborn QEII Recreation and Sport Centre opened in Christchurch
June 2, 2018

Christchurch City Council has opened its new $38.6 million facility, the Taiora: QEII Recreation and Sport Centre.

Using a name gifted by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, a North Canterbury Ngāi Tahu runanga, the new facility replaces the former QEII facility which was irreparably damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

Opened on Thursday afternoon, the 5,500 metre² facility features a 130-metre long hydroslide (waterslide), a 25-metre lap pool, a leisure pool with a lazy river channel and water toys, an adventure playground, a learn-to-swim pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a spa, a steam room and a sauna. It also has a fitness centre and cafe.

Naming of the facility reflects a new Christchurch City Council policy to include dual Māori and English words for new Council facilities. These include Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre, Ōrauwhata: Bishopdale Library and Community Centre, Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre and the new central library, Tūranga.
