read moreThe Gaelic Athletics Association (GAA) and the AFL have announced that the 2016 edition of the International Rules Test series will not take place – although a two-match series is planned in Australia in November 2017.
The management of the AFL and GAA have confirmed that from 2017 three series will be played, each of two matches apiece, in the coming years.
Following the 2017 series, a two-game series will be played in Ireland but the venue and the year has yet to be determined.
Hoping to capitalise on the strong Irish and Australian expatriate communities, a two-test series in the United States has been earmarked.
Commenting on the schedule, AFL Football Operations Manager Mark Evans stated “a series over two matches, as we used to play, will enable the players from both our sides to spend more time with the elite players of their respective code, and to satisfy the demand for fans who want to see more than one match of the very best players competing for the Cormac Macanallen Trophy.
“We look forward to hosting Ireland again, returning to Irish shores and exploring how we can take matches or exhibition games to the many expat Irish and Australians living in the US in the years ahead.”
With one-off Tests played in 2014 and 2015, an Australia – Ireland series has not been played since 2013.
