Concrete bollards to improve security at Melbourne landmarks

Concrete bollards to improve security at Melbourne landmarks
June 10, 2017

Temporary concrete bollards are being erected at Melbourne's Federation Square and Bourke Street, in response to recent terror attacks in the city and abroad.

Over the coming weeks, the Victorian Government and City of Melbourne will also be installing concrete bollards at other sites around the city to restrict vehicle access and boost security at some of city’s most popular attractions and venue.

The sites have been identified by Victoria Police based on levels of foot traffic, public gatherings and significance to Melbourne.

The Victorian Government recently allocated $10 million in the state budget for the increased security measures including permanent bollards and increased CCTV cameras, after a car drove into pedestrians on Bourke Street, killing six people, earlier this year.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews commented “constructing permanent bollards will take some time, (so) ... I have directed that temporary bollards will be put at place at Federation Square and Bourke Street and a number of other sites.

"There's no time to be wasted here when we think about London and we think about other tragic events on the other side of the world and events very close to home, we needed to to take these steps."

A temporary cyclone wire fence was put up around the MCG as an extra security measure for summer cricket matches in 2015/16, after the Stade de France was targeted in the Paris terrorist attacks.

Premier Andrews said there was a "constant process of review" on the safety of the ground, but would not confirm whether the fence would return or whether the ground was one of the other sites earmarked for new bollards.

For security reasons, the location of other sites where the additional barriers will be placed will be announced as they are installed.
