YouGov survey reveals Australian consumer’s hesitation lingers in the wake of COVID

YouGov survey reveals Australian consumer’s hesitation lingers in the wake of COVID
March 11, 2022

As Australia emerges from the grips of the COVID Omicron variant, a new YouGov survey reveals how much hesitation to participate in some leisure activities remains in Australia.

According to the survey in which 623 Australians were polled on 18th February, most remain uncomfortable going to nightclubs because of a concern of catching COVID-19. Close to half of respondents feel the same way about going to a music concert (47%), and 38% said so about sporting events.

While some apprehension remains, it’s worth noting that close to three in ten respondents said none of the leisure activities presented are cause for concern (29%).

According to the survey data, 42% also remain reluctant to buy tickets months in advance for a concert (42%), festival (41%) or sporting event (40%). There is also considerable concern around booking a summer holiday, with 35% of respondents indicating reluctance, as well as taking out a gym membership (33%).

Meanwhile, YouGov also asked respondents which leisure activity appeals most to them after COVID-19, and a quarter said dining at a restaurant (25%), ahead of going to the zoo (10%), and attending music concerts (8%).

Among the 12 activities presented to respondents, just 3% said a first date appeals to them most in a post-COVID-19 world.

These survey results come as Western Australia opens its borders, after being the lone state to have such restrictions still in place. Still, the Western Australian government has instated strict measures, including mask mandates and gathering limits, in the face of a mounting localised case count.

The survey was carried out through YouGov Direct. Learn more about YouGov Direct.
