More than 1,500 swimmers are set to take to the water at 60 swimming pools across Australia this Sunday (1st March) for the 2015 YMCA Swimathon.

Australia’s biggest swim event aims to raise $250,000to be spent on supporting people with disabilities learn to swim and access the water safely at their local YMCA.

With funds raised in local communities set to stay in their communities in order to support local people, $150,000 has already been raised nationally for the cause.

Each year the YMCA Swimathon encourages people of all ages and abilities to swim laps to help prevent drowning by raising funds to ensure more people young people get the chance to learn vital swimming and water safety skills.

Looking forward to the event, YMCA Australia Chief Executive Ron Mell explains “one life lost or one near miss to drowning is too many.

“We believe there should be no barriers for anyone who wants to learn to swim (and) through the YMCA Swimathon we want everyone, participants and beneficiaries to become healthier, happier and more connected to their local communities.”
